A Consultant physician is a doctor who practises medicine, works primarily in a hospital setting and uses non-surgical methods of treatment. Consultant physicians have trained and worked within all areas of medicine, with further extensive training in particular specialisms such as Geriatric and Stroke medicine. Including medical school, this training can take over 15 years meaning that Consultants are the most senior doctors in hospitals and they possess significant expertise in their areas of practice.
Geriatric medicine focuses on medical issues and diseases associated with ageing. A Geriatrician most often treats people over the age of 60 who have either specific or multiple medical issues. A Geriatrician is an expert in how medical conditions impact one another, in how each medication interacts with others and how both medical conditions and medications uniquely affect you as you age. Common conditions treated by a Geriatrician include funny turns and falls, weakness and mobility problems, bone health, memory concerns, medications side effects, stroke, irregular heart rhythms, high blood pressure and heart failure.
A stroke is caused when there is a blockage to the blood supply to the brain. There are two main types and are either the result of a blood clot or the rupture of an artery in the brain. These are referred to as ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes. A “mini-stroke” or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is diagnosed when the symptoms have lasted less than 24 hours.
Following a TIA or stroke, it is important you are urgently assessed and treated by a stroke specialist. A Stroke physician is an expert in assessing and investigating risk factors for TIA and stroke, and will initiate treatment in order to reduce the risk of recurrence.
Stroke physicians also provide specialist care for those who have suffered a stroke, in acute and rehabilitation stroke units and in follow-up clinics. In these settings, Stroke physicians provide expert assessment and treatment of the complications of stroke, including fatigue, depression, pain and muscle stiffness..
